Rural Renewable Energy Project (RREP), Sierra Leone

This assignment was carried out under the Rural Renewable Energy Project (RREP) – Work Package 6 (Matching Grant) in Sierra Leone, implemented by UNOPS and FCDO. The project focused on strengthening private sector engagement and improving the commercial viability of mini-grid systems through a deeper understanding of local market systems, productive use opportunities, and community-level economic development within mini-grid catchment areas.

The objective of this work package was to support evidence-based decision-making by developing a digital dashboard to visualize and communicate key indicators related to grant allocation, beneficiaries, sectoral distribution, and socio-economic outcomes. The dashboard was designed to enhance monitoring of productive energy use and support improved planning and accountability in mini-grid interventions, ultimately contributing to local job creation and improved livelihoods in supported communities.

As part of this assignment, GroupMappers provided technical support in the design and development of interactive dashboards using both ArcGIS and an open-source R Shiny platform. The dashboards included structured visualization modules covering background information, matching grant details, beneficiary profiles, operator and lot-level data, gender-related indicators, and technical assistance components. A spatial mapping interface was also developed to visualize grantees, grant amounts, sectors, beneficiaries, and employment generation across project locations.

The work included end-to-end technical development of the dashboard systems, data structuring, and preparation of supporting documentation and user guidance materials. The final outputs provided a centralized and interactive platform to improve transparency, strengthen monitoring, and support decision-making for renewable energy interventions under the RREP framework.
