DSCC Ward 29 Secondary Information
This assignment involved providing voluntary GIS and secondary data support for a research study conducted in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Ward 29, Bangladesh. The work supported a Master’s level academic research project led by an international student based in Australia, focusing on the structural condition and spatial characteristics of buildings within the ward for research purposes.
The objective of the assignment was to compile and organize relevant geospatial and secondary datasets to support the assessment of building structures, land use patterns, and associated urban risk factors. Required information included land use plans, satellite imagery, building inventories (including high-rise, institutional, and mixed-use structures), and details of schools, mosques, hospitals, fire hazard locations, and potentially hazardous or historical buildings.
GroupMappers contributed by providing key spatial datasets, including high-resolution satellite imagery of DSCC Ward 29 (multiple versions), ward boundary shapefiles, and OpenStreetMap-derived datasets containing building footprints (approximately 1,560 structures), road networks, and selected points of interest such as parks and playgrounds. Additional contextual data, particularly related to fire risk and structural conditions, was collected through field-level engagement with local fire service authorities, surveys, and interviews.
The work was conducted over a one-month period (12 January 2023 to 29 January 2023) and included structured field and desk-based activities such as location identification using Google Earth, field visits to fire service offices, stakeholder consultations, and systematic data cleaning and organization for research use.
This assignment supported academic research by providing a consolidated geospatial dataset and foundational spatial inputs for analyzing urban structure and risk conditions in DSCC Ward 29.
